Attic Insulation
In order for your home to be at its most efficient, it should be insulated from top to bottom. Your attic is one of the most important spaces in your home to insulate since it is a prime place for conditioned air to escape and outside air to seep in. Inadequate attic insulation will often mean discomfort along with higher energy bills in hot and cold months.
Luckily, there is enough space up there to make attic insulation a very flexible project. Fiberglass insulation, blown-in cellulose insulation, and especially spray foam insulation are great choices for an attic. You can even choose to take a hybrid approach for cost efficiency.
It is generally recommended that the insulation covering the attic floor (that is, the ceiling of the top floor of your house) should cover the attic floor joists. If you can still see the floor joists, you will probably need more insulation to maximize energy efficiency in the living space below.
Depending on how your attic and your home is constructed, you could further insulate your attic in order to use it as a comfortable living or storage space. This would mean not only insulating the attic floor, but also the inside of the roof. Thanks to its durability and performance, spray foam insulation is ideally suited to this purpose.
Part of insulating an attic may also include sealing air leaks, insulating air ducts, pipes, or other installations important to your home’s function and safety. If you have an older home or if you have ductwork or plumbing installed in your attic, it’s best to consult with an insulation professional so that the proper steps are taken to ensure your home’s efficiency and safety.
If you notice air leaks coming from your ceiling or if your energy bills are higher than they should be, you may need to add to or replace your existing attic insulation.
